Grassland Safari Lodge is a family-owned lodge on the western fringe of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, about 80 km north-east of Ghanzi on sand roads. It is built around a floodlit waterhole roughly 50 metres from the main pavilion, and it is a destination in itself rather than a stop on the way to one.

Chalets
Eight en-suite chalets sleeping sixteen, with double and twin beds, air conditioning, reliable hot water, wardrobes and dressing tables. A family suite option is available. Daily laundry is included. There is no camping.
Facilities at Grassland Safari Lodge
A swimming pool, a dining room, lounge and covered bar across two main buildings, and a thatched boma with a floodlit firepit overlooking the waterhole. Rates are quoted fully inclusive of activities and drinks.
Who it suits
Travellers who want the Kalahari itself rather than a night on the way through it, and anyone who wants to ride.
Location and access
About 80 km north-east of Ghanzi on sand roads — 4×4 required for self-drive. Two alternatives: the lodge has its own registered airstrip taking charters from Maun, Gaborone and Windhoek, or sedan drivers can leave the vehicle securely in Ghanzi and be collected. Road transfers from Maun can also be arranged.

Not a Trans-Kalahari stopover
This is the distinction that matters most. Kalahari Arms in Ghanzi and Thakadu Bush Camp just outside it are places to break a long drive. Grassland is 80 km further on, down sand, and getting there is a commitment. Turning up in a hire sedan expecting to drive in will not work.
What you get for that commitment is genuine Kalahari on the edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with a waterhole lit through the night about fifty metres from where you are sitting. Our Central Kalahari guide covers the reserve itself.
Horses, walks and a conservation project
The activity list is unusual: day and night waterhole viewing, game drives, horseback safaris, San cultural walks covering toolmaking and village visits, and visits to predator and white rhino conservation projects. Horse riding in particular is rare in Botswana and heavily restricted inside the national parks, so a lodge that offers it on its own ground is offering something you cannot easily buy.
Rates are fully inclusive of activities and drinks, which for a lodge this remote removes the daily arithmetic entirely.

- Fly-in guests, since the lodge has its own airstrip from Maun, Gaborone or Windhoek.
It suits you less if you are in a two-wheel-drive vehicle, if you want camping, or if you are looking for a one-night halt on the Trans-Kalahari.
A note on the name
This lodge traded for years as Grassland Bushman Lodge and several booking platforms still index it that way. The current name is Grassland Safari Lodge.

Reservations are taken by email and WhatsApp, which the lodge states is its preferred channel because cell coverage is limited. There is no online booking engine, so we have not published a booking button.
