Where Polentswa Lodge sits
Polentswa Lodge lies 222 kilometres north of Two Rivers along the Nossob Valley, on the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. That distance is the point: this is one of the deepest, least-visited positions in the park, reached along a long sand track through predator country.
The camp
There are five guest tents, twins and doubles. Five tents this far into the Kgalagadi means near-total solitude, and the camp is deliberately small.
Overlooking Polentswa Pan
The camp is set among tall trees and dwarf scrub overlooking Polentswa Pan and its waterhole. The pan is the focus of the property, and much of the game viewing happens from camp as animals come down to drink.
Black-maned lions
The Nossob Valley is famous for its black-maned Kalahari lions, and the operator’s own description centres on waking to lion call. The valley is predator-rich along its length, and Polentswa sits in the heart of it.
The Nossob Valley
The dry Nossob riverbed is the spine of the Kgalagadi. It concentrates gemsbok, springbok, wildebeest and the predators that follow them against open ground, and it gives the long, clean sightlines that make this park exceptional for photography.
Sleeping under the stars
The camp leans into the desert night: dark skies, no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres, and the sounds of the valley after dark. It is presented as a place that does not soften the wilderness.
Getting there
Polentswa is a serious drive. It is 4×4 country on deep sand, and the run up the Nossob from Two Rivers takes most of a day. Many travellers combine it with the operator’s other Kgalagadi lodge at Rooiputs, which sits 25 kilometres north of Two Rivers, breaking the journey between the two.
When to visit
The lodge is open all year. Winter days are clear and cold at night, with game concentrated on water. Summer brings heat, dramatic storms, raptors and newborn antelope, and can make the tracks slower.
Who it suits
Experienced desert travellers, photographers working the Nossob, and anyone who wants genuine remoteness rather than a comfortable safari circuit. It is not a first-time-in-Africa lodge, and that is its appeal.
