Guesthouses are the largest single class in the Botswana accommodation register, and the reason our catalogue looks so different from an international booking search. These are small, licensed, owner-run properties — usually a handful of rooms on a residential plot — and most of them never appear on the big booking channels at all.
The concentration is in Gaborone and the eastern towns, with substantial numbers in Francistown, Kasane and Maun. Expect a room, a shared kitchen or a simple breakfast, and very little else. That is the arrangement, not a shortcoming: for a working trip or a night on a route, it is usually the best value in the country. Where breakfast is the defining service, the register uses a separate class — see bed and breakfasts.
