Grays Eden stands above a cliff on the Thamalakane on the edge of Maun, built in a Mediterranean and Cape-Dutch idiom that looks nothing like the thatch-and-canvas standard of Botswana lodges. It opened in 2024 and is run alongside the Ker & Downey Botswana camps, which is how a twelve-unit property on the edge of Maun ends up sharing a reservations desk with Delta camps.

Villas and cottages
Five villas of about 81 m² and seven fisherman’s cottages of about 56 m² — twelve units in total. Air-conditioned, with Wi-Fi and mobile reception, which is not a given once you leave town.
Facilities at Grays Eden
The Eden Kitchen restaurant, a bar, a wine cave used for private dining, a 12 m swimming pool set at the cliff edge, and a spa with two treatment rooms. Helicopter excursions, boat trips and a Maun cultural tour are arranged from the property.
Who it suits
Travellers who want a designed, small property for the nights either side of a Delta trip, and are not looking for a bush camp experience in town.

A deliberate break from the Botswana lodge template
Almost everything built for travellers in Maun follows one of two patterns: thatched chalets in a garden, or canvas on a deck. Grays Eden does neither. Whitewashed walls, a wine cave and a cliff-edge lap pool are a different proposition, and whether that appeals is a matter of taste rather than quality.
What it does mean practically is that this is not a property that will make you feel you have already started the safari. If that is what you want from your first night, the riverside lodges further out on the Shorobe road do it better. If you want a good bed, a proper kitchen and a quiet twelve-unit property before an early flight, this is a strong option.
New, and priced accordingly
Grays Eden opened in 2024, which makes it one of the newest properties in Maun and means there is less independent traveller feedback about it than for the long-established addresses. Its own site publishes rates well ahead, which is a reasonable sign of a property planning to be here.
It sits at the upper end of what Maun offers. We do not publish rates, but you should not expect this to be a like-for-like alternative to a town hotel.
Who Grays Eden suits
- Travellers booking a Ker & Downey Delta itinerary, since the town nights and the camps come from one reservations desk.
- Anyone who values design and quiet over a bush setting for an arrival or departure night.
- Couples, for whom twelve units and a spa is a very different Maun from a 140-room hotel.
It suits you less if you are self-driving on a budget, travelling with children who need room to run, or want to walk to the shops.
