Where King’s Pool sits
King’s Pool stands on the King’s Pool Lagoon, an oxbow of the Linyanti River in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in northern Botswana, close to the Namibian border. The reserve is a private concession, and the camp looks out across the lagoon to the water beyond. Linyanti is one of the strongest dry-season elephant areas in Africa.
The suites
There are eight suites built in thatch and canvas, each with a lounge, a bedroom and a raised deck facing the water, finished with copper and teal accents. Eight suites on a concession of this size means very few vehicles and almost no chance of sharing a sighting.
The main area
The main dining and lounge areas look over the lagoon, with a swimming pool, a library lounge, a safari boutique and wifi.
The underground hide
King’s Pool has an eye-level underground hide set at the water. Photographing elephant from below eye level, at the distance a hide allows, is something very few camps in Botswana can offer, and it is the most distinctive thing about staying here.
The Queen Silvia barge
The camp runs a barge, the Queen Silvia, on the lagoon for cruises and sundowners. It is a slower, more sociable counterpart to the game drives and a good platform for birding.
Game drives
Game drives run twice daily in open 4×4 vehicles. The Linyanti concession holds lion, leopard and wild dog, and the elephant concentrations along the river through the dry season are among the highest anywhere.
Birding
Birding is strong across the lagoon, the riverine woodland and the marsh edge, and the barge and hide both make good platforms for it.
Stargazing and helicopter safaris
Stargazing sessions are offered at camp, and helicopter safaris can be arranged. The Linyanti sky is very dark, and the aerial perspective over the marsh and the Savute Channel is worth the cost for anyone trying to understand the landscape.
Getting there
Guests fly into Maun internationally and connect by Wilderness Air charter into the Linyanti. There is no practical self-drive access to this camp.
When to visit
May to October is dry, and elephant and predators concentrate on the Linyanti water; the hide is at its best then. November to April is green and much quieter, with migrant birds, newborn game and dramatic skies.
