Nxai Pan Camp is the only permanent camp inside Nxai Pan National Park. It faces a waterhole across salt-pan grassland, and it is the practical base for Baines’ Baobabs — the cluster of trees Thomas Baines painted in 1862 that still stand on the edge of Kudiakam Pan.

Who it suits

Travellers who want the pans country rather than the Delta, families using the family suite, and anyone who wants Baines’ Baobabs without a long day trip.

Location and access

Fly-in by light aircraft to the camp airstrip, about 40 minutes from Maun or an hour from Kasane. Self-drive by 4×4 takes roughly three hours from Maun.

How we checked this listing

Suite counts, the sole-camp status, activities and flight times come from the Kwando Safaris operator page for this camp. We have not stayed here.

Nxai Pan is a wet-season park, which reverses the usual advice

Most of Botswana peaks in the dry months. Nxai Pan does the opposite: the rains between roughly December and April green the grassland and bring zebra and springbok in numbers, with the predators behind them. If you are travelling in the southern summer and being told Botswana is out of season, this is one of the places where it is not.

National park rules apply here

Because the camp is inside a national park rather than a concession, there is no off-road driving and activities run to park hours. That is a real constraint on predator following. What you get in exchange is the pan itself, which no concession can offer.

Booking this property

Nxai Pan Camp sells through the operator and through safari agents rather than as a nightly-rate hotel room.

Book or compare

We have not been able to confirm a property-level booking route for Nxai Pan Camp. Rather than send you to a property that is not this one, the availability button compares stays across Makgadikgadi and Nata. It does not claim to open this property.

We publish no rate here. Prices move with season, occupancy and cancellation terms, and a figure copied once is a figure that goes stale.

Botswana Travel Guide may earn a commission when you book through selected links, at no additional cost to you. It does not change what we list or what we say about it.

What we publish, and what we do not

We publish no nightly rate, no live availability, no star rating and no review score of our own. Those move with season and occupancy, and a figure copied once is a figure that goes stale. What we publish is what the property is, where it sits, who it suits and how you reach it.
