Xugana Island Lodge stands on a private island on Xugana Lagoon, in the part of the Okavango that holds water all year regardless of what the flood does. It is one of the oldest names in the Delta and it has stayed a water lodge: boats, mokoro and walking on islands, with no game-drive vehicle in the programme.

Ten luxury tents, one of them wheelchair-friendly, plus one luxury family tent, taking a maximum of 22 guests. Power runs on a generator, with mains-style AC through the day and evening and 12V DC overnight.

Multi-level viewing decks over the lagoon, a swimming pool, an overwater fire deck, a bar and curio shop, covered and open-air dining, laundry included, and satellite Wi-Fi that the lodge itself describes as limited.

Birders — the lodge claims over 400 species in the area — and travellers who want the water Delta rather than the game-drive Delta. Children are accepted from six years.
Location and access
Fly-in only, by light aircraft from Maun, then a boat transfer to the island. There is no road.

What permanent water actually buys you
The Okavango flood arrives in Maun months after the rain that made it, and a great many camps marketed as Delta camps sit on seasonal floodplain that is dry ground for half the year. Xugana Lagoon is not that. It holds water regardless, which is why the boat programme runs all year and why the birding stays consistent when drier camps go quiet.
No game drives, and that is the point
If you want lion off-road at night, this is the wrong lodge and the operator does not pretend otherwise. What you get instead is silence, a mokoro at water level, and the specific pleasure of walking an island that nothing has driven across. Most people pair a water lodge like this with a dry-land camp rather than choosing between them.
