Where Chobe Chilwero sits
Chobe Chilwero Lodge stands on an elevated position on the edge of Chobe National Park at Kasane, looking out over the Chobe River. The view runs across well-tended gardens to the islands and floodplains beyond, and on a clear day as far as Namibia. Chobe holds the largest remaining population of African elephants in the world, and the park is on the lodge’s doorstep.
The suites
There are fifteen spacious standalone suites set in lush gardens. Unusually for Botswana, these are brick-and-mortar garden suites rather than tents, which makes the lodge a different proposition from the canvas camps in the concessions.
The honeymoon suite
One tucked-away suite has its own private plunge pool and is the lodge’s honeymoon option.
Family suites
Three dedicated family suites are available, and the lodge runs a full programme of activities for children. Combined with the leafy fenced grounds, that makes it one of the more practical Botswana properties for families with young children and for safari first-timers.
The spa
The lodge has a full-service spa with a treetop treatment room, offering all-natural treatments. It is regarded as one of the strongest spas on the Botswana safari circuit.
The swimming pool
There is a split-level swimming pool set in the gardens, which does a lot of work in the Chobe heat between the morning and afternoon activities.
Game drives
Twice-daily game drives run into Chobe National Park in 4×4 vehicles. The riverfront section carries the densest dry-season concentrations of elephant and buffalo anywhere in Botswana.
River cruises
Water activities are a major draw: sundowner boat trips and dedicated photographic cruises run on the Chobe River. The boat is the best platform in Chobe for photography and for close, low-angle views of elephant and hippo.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is about 90 minutes away, which puts it comfortably within day-trip range from the lodge.
Who it suits
Families, safari first-timers and travellers who would rather have a solid-walled suite, a spa and a pool than a canvas tent in a remote concession, while still being on the edge of one of Africa’s great game parks. Meals and drinks are included.
