Selebi-Phikwe was built around a copper-nickel mine and has kept a working-town character since the mine closed. It is reached by leaving the A1 at Serule, and it is the practical staging point for the road south into the Tuli Block and the Zanzibar and Platjan border crossings. The accommodation is business accommodation: hotels and guesthouses rather than lodges.
Selebi-Phikwe is an eastern Botswana town built around copper and nickel mining, reached off the A1 on the road east. Its accommodation market is shaped by contract and business travel rather than tourism, which gives it a bed stock that is larger and more hotel-like than a purely residential town of its size would carry.
For travellers, the useful angle is position. Selebi-Phikwe works as a western base for the Tuli Block and the far east of the country, and as a stop for anyone travelling between the A1 corridor and the Limpopo border areas.
The register here carries hotels alongside guesthouses and bed and breakfasts, with a spread of sizes rather than the uniformly small licences typical of the smaller A1 towns. The context worth knowing: the town was built around the BCL copper and nickel mine, which ceased operations in September 2016. The 2022 census still recorded 42,488 residents, so the infrastructure and the bed stock outlast the industry, and rooms here are usually cheaper than the equivalent in Francistown or Gaborone. Letsibogo Dam on the Motloutse, near Mmadinare, is the obvious half-day out of town.
