Lebala Camp stretches along a shady leadwood island in the Kwando Private Concession, 232,000 hectares in far northern Botswana. The concession is the point: it is private land, so the camp runs guide-and-tracker teams, drives off-road and drives at night — none of which is permitted in the national park a short distance east.

A tracker on the bonnet is a different kind of safari
Most Botswana national-park camps put one guide in the vehicle and stay on the road. A guide-and-tracker pair working off-road can pick up a wild dog trail at dawn and stay with it. It is slower, it involves long stretches of nothing, and when it works it produces the sightings that people build whole trips around.
Wild dogs are the reason people book Kwando
African wild dogs are endangered and range enormously, which makes them the hardest of the big predators to find reliably. The Kwando concession has a long-standing reputation for them, helped by denning seasons that keep packs anchored to one area for weeks. If dogs are your target, ask about denning dates before you fix your travel month.
