Rakops River Lodge is a twelve-room selected-service lodge at Rakops, on the Boteti River in the Central District. It is registered with Botswana Tourism as an operating hotel-class establishment, and it was previously listed under the name Sekgwa sa Metsi. Rakops matters to travellers for one reason above all: it is the last real settlement before the Matswere gate on the eastern side of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and the last place to fuel, buy supplies and sleep in a bed before a long stretch of sand tracks.

Facilities at Rakops River Lodge

We list no facilities here. The official register records the licence class and address but not the facility detail, and no other verifiable source was available, so anything more would be guesswork.

Location and access

At Rakops, on the Boteti River in the Central District, on the road between Motopi and Mopipi and the usual approach to the Matswere gate of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Small properties on the Trans-Kalahari route

Ghanzi is a working farming town rather than a safari destination, and most of its accommodation exists because people need to sleep somewhere between Namibia and Maun.

If you want game drives and a lodge atmosphere you want one of the game farms outside town; if you want a clean bed, secure parking and an early start, a town plot does the job better and for less.

Who it suits

  • Self-drive travellers heading into the Central Kalahari at Matswere
  • Anyone crossing between Maun and the Makgadikgadi on the Boteti road
  • Travellers who want a bed rather than a first night in the sand
  • Birders and photographers working the Boteti River
