Camp Xakanaxa stands on the Khwai River at Xakanaxa Lagoon, inside Moremi Game Reserve. That location gives it something unusual: game drives and motorboat safaris from the same camp, because the lagoon and its channels are navigable while the surrounding country is drivable. Very few Moremi camps can do both.

Tents
Eleven twin tents and one two-bedroom family tent, taking a maximum of 24 guests. Meru-style tents on decks with private verandas. Mains power runs by day and 12-volt lighting overnight.

A swimming pool with a sun deck, a plunge pool, and fire decks over the Khwai River. Game drives and boat safaris on the lagoon and channels are the daily programme.

Travellers who want both a vehicle and a boat without moving camp, and photographers working the Khwai channels.
Location and access
Normally fly-in: about 25 minutes by light aircraft from Maun to Xakanaxa airstrip, or roughly an hour from Kasane, then a 15-minute vehicle transfer. The Xakanaxa area is 4×4 self-drive country, but the camp is not marketed as a self-drive arrival.

Inside the reserve means reserve rules
Camp Xakanaxa is inside Moremi rather than on a private concession, and that has consequences travellers often do not expect. There are no night drives and no walking safaris, because the reserve does not permit them. Private concessions elsewhere in the Delta do.

The boat is the differentiator
Xakanaxa Lagoon is one of the few places inside Moremi where a motorboat is genuinely useful. Heronries, channels through papyrus, and access to floodplain edges that a vehicle cannot reach make the boat a real second way of seeing the reserve rather than a novelty.
How much water there is, and therefore how far the boat goes, depends on the annual flood. Ask the camp what the water is doing before you build an itinerary around it.
Who Camp Xakanaxa suits
- Travellers with limited time who want land and water from one camp rather than two.
- Birders and photographers, for the heronries and the channels.
- First-time Delta visitors who want Moremi itself rather than a private concession.
It suits you less if night drives or walking safaris matter to you. The reserve does not allow them.
A note on who operates it
Camp Xakanaxa is owned and operated by Desert & Delta Safaris. Several agents publish their own pages for it, sometimes with different tent counts, and at least one large operator lists it as though it were theirs. Where figures differ we have used the operator’s.
