Khwai Campsite is the public campsite at Moremi’s North Gate, on the Khwai River floodplain inside the reserve. It is run by the SKL Group of Camps, it is unfenced, and it is the classic self-drive Moremi option — the place a great many people who have driven themselves across Botswana remember most clearly.

Camping
SKL’s own page gives five sites; Tracks4Africa records ten pitches. Each site has its own braai and fire area. Ablution blocks have flush toilets and solar-heated hot and cold showers.
Facilities at Khwai Campsite
Tap water on site — not potable, so carry your drinking water. Firewood is sold at the camp. Cell reception is intermittent. There is nothing else: no shop, no restaurant, no power.
Who it suits
Self-drivers with a properly equipped 4×4 who want to be inside Moremi overnight rather than driving in from outside each morning.

Unfenced, and what that actually means
Elephant walk through this campsite. Hyena come in at night. Lion are heard and sometimes seen. There is no fence and there is no warden patrolling between the tents, and the standard guidance — do not walk to the ablutions alone after dark, do not leave food out, do not sleep with the tent open — is not decoration.
That is the price of the position, and for a great many travellers it is worth paying. Waking up on the Khwai floodplain inside the reserve is a different proposition from driving in at gate-opening. But it is not a soft option and it is not somewhere to take an unequipped vehicle or a nervous party.
Booking is the hard part
Botswana’s public campsites are booked through concessionaires rather than the parks department, and they sell out months ahead in the dry season. SKL runs an online booking system, but the campsite is selected inside the engine rather than at a direct link, so we have not published a booking button that would drop you somewhere ambiguous.
Book early, and read our 4×4 and vehicle requirements guide before you commit — the vehicle you need for this is specific, and the rainy season makes the approach considerably harder.
Who Khwai Campsite suits
- Equipped self-drivers with a 4×4, recovery gear, water and a rooftop or ground tent.
- Travellers who want Moremi at dawn without paying lodge rates.
- Anyone building a Moremi–Khwai–Savuti route, for whom North Gate is the natural hinge.
It suits you less if you are not comfortable unfenced, if you are in a two-wheel-drive vehicle, or if you want any facilities at all beyond a shower and a tap.
