Where Linyanti Tented Camp sits
Wilderness Linyanti Tented Camp stands in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in northern Botswana, in the heart of the unfenced Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier area, looking out over the Linyanti Marsh and its floodplains. The reserve runs to 126,000 hectares.
Four tents
There are four spacious en-suite tents. Four tents on 126,000 hectares is one of the lowest guest densities in Botswana, and it is the single most important thing to understand about the camp.
The style
The camp is deliberately old-fashioned in the best sense — classic safari canvas with what the operator calls olde-worlde charm, harking back to the early explorers and the pioneers of the African safari. It is the simplest of the operator’s Linyanti camps and the one with the most character.
The main area
The main area looks over the marsh, with a swimming pool, a curio corner, wifi and a boma for open-fire dining. The scale is domestic rather than grand.
The log-pile hide
A log-pile hide sits at the water for close, low-angle game viewing. In the Linyanti’s dry season the animals come to the marsh in numbers, and the hide puts you at their level without a vehicle between you.
Game drives, day and night
Game drives run twice daily, and night drives are offered. Night driving is possible because the Linyanti is a private reserve rather than national park, and it brings in the nocturnal species entirely.
Elephant and predators
The Linyanti carries some of the highest dry-season elephant concentrations in Africa, along with lion, leopard and one of the region’s strongest wild dog populations.
Birding
Birding across the marsh and the surrounding woodland is strong, and the carmine bee-eater colonies that form on the riverbanks in the warmer months are a particular draw.
Helicopter safaris
Helicopter safaris can be arranged. Seeing the Linyanti Marsh and the Savute Channel from the air makes sense of a landscape that is hard to read from ground level.
Getting there and who it suits
Guests fly into Maun and connect by Wilderness Air charter. The camp suits travellers who want the Linyanti’s game at a lower price and in a simpler, smaller camp than its neighbours, and who value character over polish.
