Where Little Vumbura sits
Little Vumbura stands on a private island in the northern Okavango Delta, inside the 148,000-acre Vumbura concession. The camp is reached only by boat, a fifteen-minute motorboat run from the landing, which is unusual even in the Delta and sets the tone for a stay here. You arrive on water and you leave on water.
The tents
There are six tented suites under the trees, finished in neutral tones with indigo accents, each en-suite and with a private deck. The camp is built for couples and small groups rather than large families, and its size means the island rarely feels occupied.
The main areas
Communal areas sit under shade, with a swimming pool looking over the floodplain, seating in the shade, a dining deck that doubles as a stargazing spot, wifi, laundry and a small store of local crafts.
Game drives
Game drives run twice daily on the surrounding concession. The northern Delta carries lechwe, buffalo, elephant and zebra on the floodplains, and lion, leopard and cheetah follow them.
Walking safaris
Guided walking safaris are offered. On a concession like Vumbura, walking is permitted where it would not be in the neighbouring national park, and the island setting makes short walks straightforward.
Mokoro excursions
Mokoro trips run through the shallow channels around the island. Given that the camp is boat-access only, the water programme is not an add-on here, it is the natural way the camp works.
Boat safaris and fishing
Motorboat safaris explore the deeper channels, and catch-and-release fishing is offered. Between the mokoro, the boats and the drives, Little Vumbura covers both halves of the Delta experience from one small camp.
Birding
Birdwatching is a standard activity; the Delta has over 400 recorded species, and the mix of permanent water, floodplain and island woodland around the camp produces a long list.
Helicopter safaris
Helicopter safaris can be arranged. Seeing the Vumbura floodplains from the air makes sense of the island geography that the boats move through at ground level.
Getting there and when to visit
Access is by Wilderness Air on the daily Delta circuit, then by boat to the island. The camp operates year-round. The flood is generally at its highest around the middle of the year, which is when the water activities are strongest; the green season is quieter and better for birds and young game.
