Mahalapye sits on the A1 roughly halfway between Gaborone and Francistown, at the point where a lot of drives stop being comfortable. It is a railway and administrative town rather than a destination, and its accommodation exists for people breaking a journey or working in the district.
That is a real need. Between Gaborone and Palapye there is very little else, and an A1 stopover with a bed and secure parking is worth more to a self-drive traveller than a lodge two hundred kilometres off the route.
