Maun Lodge sits on the Thamalakane on the town side of the river, in Boseja ward, which makes it one of the few Maun properties that is genuinely on the water without being out of town. It is also one of the largest: Botswana Tourism records 140 rooms, and the lodge runs its own airport shuttle.

Thatched chalets, riverfront rooms and suites, all en-suite and air-conditioned, with satellite television, a safe and a fridge. The scale is unusual for Maun and it shows in the range — this is a property that takes conference groups and independent travellers in the same week.
Facilities at Maun Lodge
The Boma, a riverview restaurant, plus a bar that runs live music, a swimming pool, a gym, and conference facilities the lodge lists at up to 500 delegates. A free 13-seater airport shuttle runs for guests.
Who it suits
Travellers who want the river and the town at once, and anyone who would rather be met at the airport than arrange a transfer.
Location and access
Botswana Tourism puts the lodge about 4 km from Maun International Airport and roughly 2.5 km from the centre of Maun. Tar the whole way, no 4×4 required.

On the river, but on the town side
Maun’s accommodation splits fairly cleanly. There is the town, where the banks, the supermarkets and most of the operators are. Then there is the Shorobe road running north-east, where the riverside lodges and campsites sit between about 10 and 20 minutes out. Maun Lodge is one of the few that is on the Thamalakane and still on the town side of it.
That matters most on an arrival or departure day, when the difference between a five-minute drive and a twenty-minute one decides whether you make an early light-aircraft slot without setting an alarm for the dark. Our Maun guide sets out the geography and the distances.
Scale changes what a lodge feels like
At 140 rooms this is a hotel operating at a scale no safari camp in Botswana comes near, and it is worth being clear about what that means. You get infrastructure — a gym, a conference wing, a shuttle, a kitchen that can serve a full house. You do not get the hush of a small riverside camp, and on a week with a conference in the building you will notice.
Whether that is a fault depends entirely on why you are in Maun. For a night at the start or end of a Delta trip it is largely irrelevant. For a stay of several days it is the main thing to weigh.
Who Maun Lodge suits
- Travellers arriving without a vehicle, because the free airport shuttle removes the one logistical problem Maun reliably creates.
- Anyone who wants the Thamalakane without committing to a twenty-minute drive into town for every errand.
- Groups and business travellers, for whom the conference capacity and room count are the point rather than a compromise.
It suits you less if you are after a small, quiet riverside property. The lodges further out on the Shorobe road do that better.
