Maxa Camp opened in March 2025 overlooking the hippo-frequented Maxa Lagoon, at the source of the Selinda Spillway in the north-eastern Delta, inside the KAZA Transfrontier area. It takes twelve guests in five tents, and its most-quoted feature is a wood-fired oven built into the termite mound that made the island.

Facilities at Maxa Camp
Free-form lounge and dining under canvas, a courtyard with picnic-style tables, the wood-fired termite-mound oven, a sala with a day bed and a suspended cargo-net hammock, a library, an editing workspace and Wi-Fi.
Who it suits
Photographers — there is a dedicated editing space, which is rare — and travellers who want a very small, very new camp.
Location and access
Fly-in by light aircraft. Opened 20 March 2025.
An editing workspace tells you who the camp is for
Most camps give photographers a plug and a prayer. A dedicated space with power and a table, out of the sun, means the operator expects guests to shoot seriously and download between drives. If you travel with two bodies and a laptop, that single facility is worth more than a spa.
The Selinda Spillway is a moving target
The Spillway links the Okavango and the Linyanti and flows only in strong flood years, having been dry for decades at a stretch in the twentieth century. Camps at its source get spectacular water when it runs. Ask what it has done in the season you are booking rather than assuming the photographs are current.
