Nogatsaa Pans Chobe Lodge sits in a remote corner of Chobe National Park overlooking Kwikamba Pan, the largest of several clay-bottomed pans in the area. Nogatsaa is the part of Chobe that the riverfront day-trippers never reach, and the lodge is built around that isolation rather than apologising for it.

Who it suits

Repeat Chobe visitors who found the riverfront crowded, and anyone who wants pan country and night skies rather than a river.

Location and access

Reached through Chobe National Park; the interior routes are sand and demand a properly equipped vehicle or a lodge transfer.

Chobe is much bigger than its riverfront

Almost every photograph of Chobe you have seen was taken on a fifteen-kilometre stretch of river near Kasane. The park runs far south of that into pan and mopane country that most visitors never see. Game density is lower and sightings are harder won — but you will have them to yourself.

Clay pans hold water after rain, and that sets the season

Nogatsaa’s pans fill in the rains and draw game inland, away from the river, which inverts the usual Chobe calendar. If you are travelling between roughly December and April and being told Chobe is second-best then, this is the part of the park where that is not true.
