Where Xigera sits
Xigera Safari Lodge stands deep in the Moremi Game Reserve, on an island in the permanent water of the Okavango Delta. Moremi is the Delta’s protected heart, and Xigera’s position gives it both water frontage and island game country.
Twelve suites
There are twelve suites, positioned for privacy and stillness, each with an open outlook onto the surrounding wilderness. Twelve suites in a reserve this size is a very light footprint.
Design and craft
Xigera is unusual among Botswana lodges in that design is central rather than incidental. Every space has been imagined and handcrafted by southern African creatives, from sculptural chairs to copper fireplaces, and the lodge is explicit that nothing is merely decorative.
The art collection
The lodge holds what it describes as Africa’s largest private collection of contemporary art in hospitality, and functions as a living gallery as much as a safari camp. For travellers who care about African art and design, there is nothing else quite like it in Botswana.
The Baobab Treehouse
Xigera operates a Baobab Treehouse for sleep-outs under the stars, set away from the main lodge. It is the lodge’s signature experience and needs to be booked as part of a stay.
Water in Moremi
The lodge sits on permanent water, so mokoro and boat activity is not dependent on the annual flood arriving. That is a meaningful distinction from camps in the seasonal parts of the Delta.
Game viewing
Moremi is among the richest wildlife areas in Botswana, holding elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, wild dog and very large numbers of antelope. Xigera’s island position gives access to both floodplain and dry-land species.
Getting there
Xigera is reached by light aircraft from Maun, as is standard for Delta camps in Moremi. There is no practical self-drive access.
Who it suits
Travellers who want the Delta at the very top end and who care about design, craft and contemporary African art as much as about game viewing. It is a destination lodge rather than one stop on a fast circuit, and it rewards a longer stay.
