Where Chief’s Camp sits
Chief’s Camp stands on Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve, in the heart of the UNESCO-protected Okavango Delta. Chief’s Island is the largest landmass in the Delta and was once a royal hunting ground, which is where the name comes from. The camp sits in a leafy spot beside the water, surrounded by what is arguably the richest concentration of wildlife in Botswana, year-round.
Predator country
Moremi and Chief’s Island are among the most predator-dense areas in Africa. The dry season is the strongest time for lion, cheetah and the other big cats, when game concentrates on the island’s higher ground.
The seasonal shift
As water levels rise the pattern changes: elephant, impala and giraffe move onto the island seeking higher ground, so the island stays productive across the year rather than emptying out. Birdlife is exceptional throughout.
The suites
The suites are the largest in the area, each with a wraparound terrace and a private plunge pool. That combination of size and privacy is what the camp is best known for.
The main pool
There is a main swimming pool, and the camp’s own description has elephant ambling past while guests are in it. On Chief’s Island that is not marketing licence: the game moves through.
Game drives
Twice-daily game drives run in 4×4 vehicles across the island. Moremi is a national reserve, so the drives follow park rules, but the traversing on Chief’s Island is exceptional.
Mokoro excursions
Seasonal excursions in traditional mokoro canoes explore the surrounding wetlands. The mokoro is the Delta’s own craft, poled from the stern through shallow channels, and it depends on the annual flood.
Walking
Guided walking is part of the activity programme, which changes the pace of a stay and reaches ground the vehicles cannot.
Families
The camp is family-friendly, with a dedicated children’s retreat that includes a games room and interactive nature lessons. That is unusual at this level in the Delta, where many camps set a high minimum age.
Wellness
There are spa treatments, a swimming pool and a gym. Between the morning and afternoon activities, that fills the long middle of a Delta day.
