Accommodation in Shakawe

Shakawe is the northern Panhandle town, where the Okavango crosses into Botswana from the Caprivi and runs south as a single deep channel between papyrus banks. The accommodation is unusual for Botswana in being reachable by road rather than by charter: river lodges and fishing camps along the bank, and guesthouses in the village serving the Mohembo border and the long road down to Maun. Tsodilo Hills is about forty kilometres away.

Shakawe sits at the top of the Okavango Panhandle, where the river enters Botswana from Namibia and before it spreads into the delta proper. The Mohembo border with the Caprivi is just north, and Tsodilo Hills — the country’s World Heritage rock art site — is reached from the road south of the village.

Accommodation here is river accommodation. Lodges and campsites line the Panhandle with fishing, birding and mokoro access, and the village itself carries a set of small licensed guesthouses used by travellers crossing the border or heading for Tsodilo.

This is a different Okavango from the fly-in camps: reachable by road, cheaper, and centred on the river rather than on game drives. If you are driving between Namibia and Maun, Shakawe is the natural first or last Botswana night.
