Where Shakawe River Lodge sits
Shakawe River Lodge stands on the Okavango River about ten kilometres south of Shakawe, in the Panhandle — the narrow, permanently flooded channel that carries the Okavango down from the Namibian border before it spreads into the Delta. The lodge looks out over the river and the papyrus on the far bank. It is one of the first proper stops for travellers crossing at Mohembo, and one of the last before the long sand and tar run south to Maun.
Rooms, chalets and cabins
The lodge is unusually varied for the Panhandle. There are ten thatched chalets, ten standard safari rooms and six fishing cabins, all en-suite, so the property covers a wide span from a comfortable room for a night in transit to a chalet worth settling into for several days.
Camping
There are also ten individual campsites with shared ablutions, which makes Shakawe River Lodge one of the few places in the Panhandle where a self-drive party and a lodge party can travel together and both be properly accommodated. The campsite has its own bar and restaurant, separate from the main lodge.
Eating and the main lodge
The main lodge runs an a la carte restaurant, and there is a swimming pool and a sundeck over the river. The layout keeps the camping side and the lodge side distinct, which is worth knowing if you want quiet.
Fishing
The Panhandle is the strongest fishing water in the Okavango system, and the lodge is set up for it: boats are available for hire, and the fishing cabins exist because anglers keep coming back. Tigerfish and bream are the targets. Botswana closes the Okavango to angling in January and February, so plan around that.
Birding
Birding here is exceptional and is done largely from the water. The riverine forest, reedbeds and sandbanks between Shakawe and Mohembo hold species that are hard to find elsewhere in the country, and the river cliffs upstream host well-known breeding colonies in the warmer months.
Mokoro and boat trips
Mokoro rides and boat cruises run from the lodge. In the Panhandle the mokoro is used on the quieter side channels rather than the main stream, and it is the best way to get close to the papyrus edge.
Tsodilo Hills
The lodge offers day visits to the Tsodilo Hills, Botswana’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, about an hour and a half away by road. The hills carry thousands of rock paintings and remain a place of spiritual significance to the San and Hambukushu communities; visits are guided.
When to visit
Because the Panhandle holds water all year, the lodge does not depend on the annual flood. May to September is dry, cooler and easiest for boating and camping. October to April is hotter and wetter, better for birds, and the season when migrants and the breeding colonies are active.
Who it suits
This is a lodge for anglers, birders, overlanders and anyone driving between the Caprivi and Maun who wants more than a transit night. The range of accommodation and the separate campsite make it one of the most flexible bases in the Panhandle. It is a river lodge, not a game camp — the wildlife here is birds, hippo, crocodile and the occasional elephant on the bank.
