Shakawe
The top of the Okavango Panhandle: a river village at the far north-west corner of Botswana, the base for the best fishing and birding water in the country, and forty kilometres from one of the oldest inhabited places on earth.

Where Shakawe is, and why it is different
Shakawe sits in the north-west corner of Botswana, close to both the Namibian and Angolan borders, at the point where the Okavango River enters the country and begins the long fan that becomes the Delta. The 2011 census recorded 6,693 people in the village and 7,506 in the wider locality, which makes it small — but it is the largest settlement on the Panhandle and the practical base for everything that happens on this stretch of river.
The Panhandle is not the Delta most visitors picture. There are no mokoro channels winding through flooded grassland here and no fly-in island camps. This is a proper river, deep and permanent, running between papyrus banks — and that difference is the entire point. It is why the fishing is serious, why the birding is different from anywhere else in Botswana, and why the accommodation here is river lodges and campsites rather than safari concessions.
The Mohembo Bridge
Until recently, crossing the Okavango here meant a pontoon — daylight hours only, sharing the water with crocodiles and hippos. The Mohembo Bridge opened on 1 February 2023: a 1.2-kilometre cable-stayed structure whose towers were designed to echo elephant tusks. It links Mohembo East to Mohembo West and the Namibian border beyond, and it has quietly changed the logistics of the whole north-west, opening road access to a corner of the Delta that used to be genuinely awkward to reach.
For a traveller it means the drive north from Maun now ends at a bridge rather than a queue, and that a Caprivi crossing into Namibia is a straightforward day rather than a gamble on ferry hours.
Fishing and birding on the Panhandle
Shakawe is the staging point for Panhandle fishing trips, and this is the water that draws anglers to Botswana specifically. It is also a birding destination in its own right rather than a by-product of a game drive: permanent river, papyrus, reed beds and riverine woodland produce a species list that overlaps only partly with the dry-country lists further south and east.
We do not publish catch reports, seasons or operator claims we cannot verify. Ask any lodge directly what is running when you intend to travel, and treat anything phrased as a guarantee with the scepticism it deserves.
Tsodilo Hills
About forty kilometres from Shakawe are the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage property — UNESCO gives the inscription year as 2001, while Botswana Tourism and several other accounts give 2002. Somewhere between four and four and a half thousand rock paintings survive there — red finger paintings and geometric designs, most made by San people and some by Khoe pastoralists, largely during the first millennium AD. The hills are sacred ground: the San, the original inhabitants, and the Hambukushu, who have occupied them for around two centuries, both hold that ancestral spirits dwell there, and rituals for assistance and rain were performed at the site. Archaeological evidence points to something close to 100,000 years of human presence.
This is the single strongest reason to give Shakawe more than a transit night. Tsodilo is geographically isolated from every other rock art site in southern Africa — the nearest is 250 kilometres away — and it is a day trip from a Shakawe bed rather than an expedition.
Getting there
- From Maun — north on the tarred road through the Panhandle. Public bus takes roughly five hours; a private vehicle is quicker but the road surface has suffered in places, so do not assume highway speeds throughout.
- By air — Shakawe has an airstrip, and for many visitors flying is the practical option.
- To Namibia — across the Mohembo Bridge to the border and the Caprivi Strip.
- Onward — the northern Delta and the Linyanti are reached from here, though largely by air or by arrangement rather than by self-drive.
Where to stay, and how long
Two nights minimum if Tsodilo is on your list, and three if fishing or birding is the reason you came — a single night on the Panhandle is a wasted drive. The inventory here is river lodges, camps and guesthouses rather than town hotels, and the good river frontage is finite, so this is one of the places in Botswana where booking early genuinely matters.

It is a different river, a different kind of trip and a different set of lodges. Come for the water and Tsodilo, not as a cheap way to tick the Okavango.
