Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

Where Nxabega sits

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp stands on a pristine private Big Five concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, in the Okavango Delta. The camp sits where the dry land meets the water, which is what allows it to run a genuine land-and-water programme rather than one or the other.

The tents

There are nine safari tents set on suspended platforms, plus one family tent with an enclosed interleading walkway. Nine tents is small, and the suspended platforms keep the camp light on ground that floods.

Day and night safaris

Game drives run both day and night. Night drives are possible because this is a private concession and not national park, and they bring in the nocturnal species — genet, civet, porcupine, and hunting predators — that day drives miss entirely.

Mokoro and boats

Seasonal mokoro excursions and motorised boat cruises both run, water levels permitting. The mokoro is the Delta’s own craft and the quietest way to move through the reed channels; the motorboat covers the deeper water and more ground.

Fishing

Catch-and-release fishing is offered on the water. It is a good middle-of-the-day activity when the game has gone quiet.

Walking safaris

Guided walking safaris run on the concession, with the guides working through tracks, signs and animal behaviour rather than covering distance. Walking is not permitted in Moremi next door.

Birding

Over 400 species have been recorded in the area, and the camp is a well-known place to look for Pel’s fishing owl — a large, nocturnal, riverine-forest owl that is one of the harder birds in southern Africa to find. Swarovski binoculars are provided, one pair per tent, for the duration of a stay.

Families

Children of all ages are welcome, childminders are available on request, and the camp runs the WILDchild programme of interactive activities. Very few Delta camps take children of any age, so this is a meaningful distinction.

Camp facilities

There is a swimming pool with loungers and shaded salas looking over the Delta, a massage sala for wellness treatments, a shop of handcrafted regional items, and boma dining under the stars. Wifi is available in the tented suites.

Getting there

SA Airlink flies daily to Maun from Johannesburg and Cape Town; Mack Air runs shared or private charters, or Helicopter Horizons flies direct. By fixed wing the route is Maun to Nxabega airstrip, then a game drive and, seasonally and water permitting, a boat transfer to camp.
