Overview
Guma Lagoon Camp sits on a permanent lagoon at the north-western edge of the Okavango, in the stretch of river and floodplain known as the Panhandle. This is the part of the Delta where the Okavango still runs as a defined river between papyrus banks, before it spreads into the channels and islands most people picture. The camp is built under mature riverine trees on the lagoon shore, and it is organised around the water rather than around game drives.
Botswana Tourism is explicit that this is not a game camp. Hippo and crocodile are in the lagoon, sitatunga move through the papyrus and elephant pass through, but you do not come here for a Big Five checklist. You come for fishing, birds and the particular quiet of the upper river.
Rooms and camping
There are 16 rooms, which can be taken catered or self-catering, and six campsites. The rooms are tented chalets under thatch and shade netting, raised on timber decks among the trees, with mosquito nets over the beds and a view out through the vegetation towards the water. The campsites suit self-drive travellers carrying their own kit, and the self-catering option bridges the two — a bed and a roof without full board.
Facilities at Guma Lagoon Camp
Wi-Fi is available. Boats and mekoro operate from the camp, and helicopter scenic flights over the Delta can be arranged from here. Fishing is the camp’s long-standing speciality: the Panhandle is where tigerfish and bream fishing in Botswana is concentrated, and the seasonal barbel run draws anglers and fish eagles to the same stretch of water.
Location and access
The turn-off is at Etsha 13, one of the Etsha villages strung along the western side of the Panhandle. From there it is roughly 15 kilometres of thick sand to the camp. Botswana Tourism describes the road as very sandy and at times flooded, so a 4×4 is required rather than recommended; if you are not driving one, transfers from Etsha 13 can be arranged in advance. Plan the last leg in daylight.
Who it suits
Anglers, birders and self-drive travellers who want a genuine Delta setting without a fly-in budget. It suits people who are comfortable with sand driving, or willing to be transferred, and who would rather spend three nights on one lagoon than move every night. It does not suit anyone whose main goal is predators and big herds — for that you want Moremi, Khwai or the Linyanti.
Nearby and trip context
The Panhandle works as the western approach to the Delta, and it pairs naturally with Tsodilo Hills to the north-west and with Shakawe further up the river. Travellers heading on to the Caprivi or into Namibia often use this stretch as their last Botswana stop; travellers coming the other way use it as the first taste of the Okavango before continuing south to Maun.
